What can a dyslexia assessment tell us?
Every person has an individual learning profile. A diagnostic dyslexia assessment explores patterns of strengths and areas of difficulty to help understand why aspects of reading, spelling, writing or processing information may feel more challenging.
The assessment considers literacy skills alongside areas that can contribute to learning, such as phonological processing, memory, rapid naming and other relevant processing skills.
The findings are considered alongside developmental, educational and background information to determine whether the evidence is consistent with dyslexia.
What age can someone be assessed for dyslexia?
Assessments can be conducted at 8 years old, though early evaluation ( preschool or early primary years) is often ideal. Early identification enables timely interventions, which can mitigate the long-term effects of dyslexia.

What does the assessment look at?
The assessment explores a range of areas relevant to dyslexia and literacy development. Depending on the individual, this may include:
reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension
spelling and written skills
phonological awareness and processing
verbal and visual memory
rapid naming and processing efficiency
language and reasoning skills
relevant developmental and educational history
A range of standardised assessment measures are used to build a detailed picture of the individual’s learning profile.
Who can carry out a dyslexia assessment?
A diagnostic dyslexia assessment can be carried out by a suitably qualified specialist teacher/assessor who holds a current Assessment Practising Certificate (APC), or by a psychologist specialising in Specific Learning Difficulties. I am a qualified specialist dyslexia assessor and hold a current APC through the Dyslexia Guild.
How much does a dyslexia assessment cost?
A full diagnostic dyslexia assessment costs £545.
This includes the assessment itself, a comprehensive written diagnostic report, individual recommendations for support, and the opportunity to discuss the findings with me afterwards.

How can a dyslexia assessment help a child?
A diagnostic assessment can provide a clearer understanding of an individual’s learning profile and explain why certain areas may feel more difficult.
The report identifies strengths and areas requiring support and provides practical, individual recommendations that can be used at school, college, university, in the workplace or at home.
Where appropriate, the findings may also help inform reasonable adjustments, assistive technology and consideration of examination access arrangements. Any access arrangements are determined by the school, college or examination centre in line with current regulations and the individual’s normal way of working.
Most importantly, an assessment can help the individual understand how they learn and identify strategies that allow them to work more effectively and confidently.
